The Santa Fe Institute’s Journalism Fellowship

About

The Santa Fe Institute (SFI) in New Mexico is a private, not-for-profit, independent research and education center, where leading scientists grapple with some of the most compelling and complex problems of our time.

The SFI, with the generous support of SFI Board of Trustees Chair Emeritus Bill Miller, offers a journalism fellowship for accomplished reporters with a demonstrated interest in reporting about matters related to complex adaptive systems. The premise of the fellowship is to transcend the journalist’s shorter-term, deadline-driven reporting focus to explore complex systems science more deeply, to discover the state and limitations of current scientific theory and to understand the issues underlying current scientific debates in many scientific fields.

The fellowship term is at least one month and up to three months, which provides an immersive opportunity for fellows to participate in SFI complexity education programs, and to participate in scientific workshops, working groups, offsite meetings such as Business Network Topical Meetings and SFI Short Courses.

Eligibility

The fellowship is open to journalists from all countries who can demonstrate an interest in science or in problems that interdisciplinary science can help address. They should have at least seven years of experience.

Reporters, writers, editors, producers, or program hosts working in newspapers, magazines, news websites, television, or radio can apply. Preference will be given to journalists working primarily in the English language.

Fellowship

The fellows will receive a monthly stipend of $7,000 (approx. €5,100). Travel reimbursement of up to $2,000 (approx. €1,500) is provided so the fellow may participate in one or more SFI-sponsored offsite events.

Application

The application deadline is 1 August, 2014.

Interested journalists should apply for the fellowship by submitting the following documents:

  • Curriculum Vitae;
  • Five past samples of professional work;
  • Fellowship proposal letter;
  • Two letters of recommendation.

All documents should be sent to John German, SFI Director of Communications, at  jdg@santafe.edu.
